The Map Room Chelsea

With the aid of 17th Century maps of the world as source material, and using their traditional layout, I tried to maintain their same sense of charm while designing the maps and images to fit within the restrictions of each section of wall. England features large on the main wall and is painted on its side which is how it was sometimes illustrated in this early period.

In common with maps of this time Mythological creatures and people fill the borders. Marbled paper was prepared off site and fitted into the dado area. Faux stonework was also painted to the cornice and all the woodwork antiqued and gilded.
